Women & Energy Committee Announced with the World Green Growth Organization
LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK – The World Green Growth Organization is excited to announce the Women and Energy Committee, which will focus on the social aspects of the energy industry that impact how decisions are made. The Committee will advocate to amplify women’s voices and support their roles in leadership.
Despite women making up 48 percent of the global labor force, women only account for 22 percent of the traditional energy sector (International Energy Agency, 2022). In response, energy companies must explore initiatives to incorporate equality and justice into their business strategies.
The Committee will meet to discuss various items related to the role of women in sustainable energy development. Topics include energy security, transitioning to low-carbon energy sources, and environmental justice, as well as exploring partnerships with organizations and leaders key to the energy industry. The Committee is comprised of 13 leaders on the cutting edge of nonprofit, corporate, public policy, entrepreneurial, and technological innovation.
“Since its founding, the WGGO seeks to amplify the green economy as our growth causes us to explore ways of sustainable development and what should be a goal for all on our planet—the eradication of poverty. In that regard, the Women & Energy Committee is an important initiative because it harnesses the power of dynamic women leaders in the energy sector and seeks to apply it to important goals such as energy security, transitioning to low-carbon energy sources and environmental justice. As Chair, I look forward to leading my colleagues on the Committee in this important initiative to help ensure that the beauty of our world is available to many future generations,” says Chair Shashrina Thomas
